About the Author
Welcome to my personal author’s page, where you can explore my journey as a writer, discover my published works, and learn about my upcoming projects. I aim to inspire and connect with readers through my writing and speaking engagements.
Published Works
I have published a series of Leader and Reflection Guides through the nonprofit ministry I started, Broken and Mended. Thousands of these books are in use in Africa, and hundreds here in the U.S. Though originally designed with a support-group model in mind, they can be used in Bible class, small groups, and personal settings.
In May of 2026, Purpose in Pain: Rediscovering God’s Purpose Through the Pain of Chronic Illness was published by Wipf & Stock Publishers. It is now available as a paperback, hardcover, or ebook. This book guides the chronic illness/pain sufferer through honest lament and grief in the first half (Accepting What is Lost), while helping the reader rediscover God’s unchangeable purpose for our lives in the second half (Embracing What Is Gained).
Upcoming Projects
I am currently working on my second book, which will be a forty-day devotional book. The working title is The God Who Walks With Us: Forty Days with Jesus for the Chronically Ill. Like Purpose in Pain, it is written for the chronically ill community, though it will be helpful to anyone who is familiar with grief and suffering and searching for Jesus in the midst of the storm. More details coming.
Speaking Engagements
I am available for speaking engagements on the topics of chronic illness/pain and faith. I am happy to talk about my new book or other aspects relating to chronic illness ministry. I was a preacher for over twenty years and have been invited to speak in many places around the world.
My wife (Katie) and I also conduct Broken and Mended Seminars in North America for churches that want to host a special weekend to encourage the chronically ill of the church and community. These seminars can be tailored to your desires and schedule. See more at brokenandmended.org.

Visit My Other Site
For more resources and insights, visit Broken and Mended at brokenandmended.org, where I share additional writings and reflections. I also host a podcast called In the Seams that currently records monthly. Most of the time, we interview someone who has struggled through suffering but, through God’s faithfulness, has found a voice to encourage others. We love to amplify such voices. Reach out if you have a story to tell or know someone who does.
What inspired you to write?
A wonderful teacher in 5th grade believed in my writing ability so much that she told me, “Please, David, don’t ever stop. You are too good!” I was coming off a terrible fourth-grade year, and I didn’t think there was anything special about me as a student. Mrs. Pierce thought otherwise. I did some writing for academic competitions for a few years after that, but let that drive fall by the wayside once I reached high school.
Years later, I rediscovered my writing ability as a ministry student and continued to grow as a writer—once again encouraged and challenged by wonderful teachers along the way. Writing (sermons, Bible classes, devotionals, bulletin articles, etc.) became a way of life over the years. But it was through suffering with chronic illness and pain that I found my voice as a writer. I began to write blog posts for the new ministry I had started (Broken and Mended). I created our first resource guides out of necessity, as there was nothing like it in the marketplace.
Finally, in 2023, an idea for a book came to my mind that I knew I had to write, which became Purpose in Pain. I didn’t know whether I would find a publisher or self-publish—I just knew I had to write the book. So, I did, and I was blessed with a great publisher. I hope it is the first of many!
